Abstract
Peritonitis is a major complication in continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialsysis 9CAPD). S everal conneciton techniques have developed to reduce the srate of peritonits. This study was designated to evaluate the effect of the double bag system
on
the
prevalence of peritonitis in patients with CAPD.
We investigated 42 patients who were started CAPD by double bag system during 1991. 4 to 1993. 6. All patients had confirmed as end stage renal disease and had followed up monthly after initiation of CAPD. The rate of peritonitis and
characteristics of
patients were evaluated.
@ES The following result were obtained:
@EN 1) The mean age was 53 yearss and the sex distribution was 28 males to 14 females. Underlying renal dieases were 11 chronic glomerulonephritis, 30 diabetic nephropathy and 1 billateral cortical necrosis.
2) Peritonitis incidence showed 1 episode/15.39 patient-months and 0.779 episode/patient/year.
3) The positive rate in culture of peritoneal dialysate was 71.05%. Of the organisms sisolated from patients with peritonitis, gram positive cocci account for 55.5% (33% coagulase negatives staphylococcus, 18.5% Stapylococcus aureus) and gram
negative
bacilli account for 29.6%. Candida species account for 14.8%.
4) The common cause of deaths were CAPD peritonitis with sepsis, cerebrovascular accident and cardiovascular complication.
In conclusion, double bag system is effective method to prevent CAPDD peritonitis that is major complication in performing CAPD.
